Penywaun Child Poverty ‘Scandalous’

January 9, 2009

The full extent of child poverty in Penywaun has been revealed by Plaid Cymru’s parliamentary candidate, Dr Dafydd Trystan Davies.

He said it was scandalous that more than half of the children in the area lived in low-income families.

Aberdare-born Dr Davies said the highest rates were in Penywaun with 82 per cent of children in low-income families (705 children out of 855) and Penrhiwceiber with 74 per cent (1,195 out of 1,615).

He said: “These figures come from the Campaign to End Child Poverty, which is putting pressure on the UK Government to meet its child poverty reduction commitments.

“It is a shocking indictment of our society that any child should be living in poverty and it is particularly disturbing that more than 7,300 children in the Cynon Valley – 55 per cent of the total – are in low-income families.

“It is a great pity that the Government does not help the situation by levying a windfall tax on the profits of the energy companies and have money available to help with people’s rising gas and electricity bills.”
